What a wonderful week we had! Full of birthdays, firefighters and laughs. We are doing so much better and adjusting well to first grade. I am proud of all the hard work the students (and parents) have been doing! Last week the firefighters came in and we learned all about fire safety. Reading: We are going to be going over our strategies. We will be talking about trying it two ways, getting a running start and how first graders DO NOT sound out words. We use our strategies. Writing: We will be working on editing and fixing our small moment stories. We have been working so hard and have so many stories to choose from! I am very proud of this class and their hard work and dedication. Math: We are starting our addition unit. We will be looking at story problems, making our own equations and different ways to solve math addition problems. Please look over the work at home. Remember we don't always do all the work so if it is not finished it might be because we did it together. Phonics: We will be studying our sight words and adding more to our word wall. Social Studies: We are looking at family traditions and seeing how families change over time. Reminders: If you are interested in helping at the Halloween Party let me know ASAP. We had the chance to meet Spirit and the head of the Oakland County Animal Shelter. We made dog treats for the animal shelter and we took the pictures from their website and made posters. Look for them hung up around Lake Orion! We are so grateful to have this opportunity to give back and create amazing memories. We are really seeing a difference in our students and how they react and act on things. #Otherpeoplematter This week we have a lot of fun and learning ahead of us. So make sure we are getting a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast. Reading: In the Frog Binders, we also have the login to Raz Kids. This is an online app where students can read books at their levels. We are using our strategies to figure out the tricky words in our reading. We are looking at words and thinking Does this look right? Does this sound right? These are strategies you can be doing at home. Everyone in class has their take home books nows. We are limited on the number of books for my A B C D reader in our classroom. So eventually we will be having at least 5 books take home books but right now we don't have enough with the number of students at these levels. Some students are struggling with coming up with ideas. When your are having your family meals I suggest talking about memories and adventures you have been on as a family. This helps spark their memory and give them something exciting to talk about. This week we will be looking at Mentor Texts and using what we notice and putting it in our own writing. Math: Amazing job on the past math test. Please look for the tests to come home today. Please go over the test with your child. This week we are looking at addition and story problems. We are working on being good partner readers and using our strategies to work together. I have sent home the take home books for everyone. Please send them back every week (your choice) to get new books and at the right level. I will be assisting the students for the first few times, then they will be able to choose the books. Make sure we are reading at home! Writing: We are working on our small moment stories. We are writing about things that have happened in our lives. We are working on adding details and feelings this week. Phonics: We are going to be looking at blends and digraphs this week. We will also be adding new snap words to our word wall. Math: We will be wrapping up our partners unit. Please review the papers that have been coming home. We will have our first test on Wednesday and Thursday. Social Studies: We will be looking at families this week. We will be talking about the similarities and differences. Make a Difference Day: On Friday (our half day) Webber will be doing volunteer projects for other people. We are emphasizing the impact of other people matter. First grade will be assisting the animal shelter by making posters of the dogs and cats, and making treats for them. We are getting back into the routine of school. It has been quite an adjustment for a few friends, so make sure we are getting enough sleep each night. By the end of the week we had a few friends falling asleep. I would like to thank everyone who came to curriculum night. I appreciate all the support. I will be sending home the sign up genius for volunteers in the next week. I also have a few positions available on my home page, so check that out. I also want to express my gratitude for the families who sent in the school supplies, extra clothes and headphones. The students really have benefited from all of this. We are working on staying focused on our books and not distracting our friends when we read. I will start sending home take home books in the next few weeks, so look for that to come home. Writing: We are working on writing small moment stories. If you have not sent in the card-stock with ideas for our writing please send that in as soon as possible. We are working on rereading our writing and listening to the sounds we hear. I love reading the stories the students are writing, so ask about them at home. They are all very proud of their writing. Phonics: We are working on studying names and what we notice about them. We have also talked about how we got our names. If your child doesn't know, this is a great story which they love to share with the class. Science: We have been talking about what scientists are and what they do. This week we are talking about the moon and patterns we notice. Shared Reading: We are reading a poem about being together. We are going to be looking at snap words and other words we notice in the poem. Math: We will continue to look at partners of numbers. Please review the papers sent home each night. P2: We will be looking at curiosity this week. Goals: Our goals that we are working on this week are listening. We are having a hard time listening to our friends when it is their time to speak. I am not ready to say goodbye to everyone. This year has been wonderful and words cannot express how much I am going to miss each student and family. You are all such a huge part of my life and not coming in each day to see everyone's smile faces is going to be tough. We have so many amazing memories and this group is something i will never forget. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you, for everything. Now that we made a poster we are going to share it with the class. The rest of the week we are going to be exploring series books in our levels to find some good books to read over summer break! Writing: We have our informational writing test this week, so we will be practicing the beginning of the week. The rest of the school year we will be making mini-books focusing on the skills we have used this year. Math: We are going to be focusing on our skills and working on math challenges. This week we have a lot of fun activities that we are doing! Reading: We are starting nonfiction research groups. Each student will be part of a nonfiction group and will study a different topic. They will do a presentation on their topic on Friday with their groups. They will be looking up facts and reading all about a topic of their choice. Almost everyone was tested last week on their reading levels and received emaisl home on what to work on. Please remember this is just to help them to keep moving as a reader. This will help them over the summer and into second grade. If you have any questions, please let me know. Writing: This week will have our final test on opinion writing on Tuesday. We also will be doing a review of information writing and the students will be tested on that on Friday. We will be review everything we have learned in writing this week. Phonics: We will be reviewing vowel teams this week. Math: We will be reviewing for the common assessment. The common assessment will be taken on Friday. Please practice the skills at home so we will be ready for our last math test on Friday! Science: We will be wrapping up our light unit this week. Have an amazing week, Ms. Weaver Due to the craziness of the week I am sending home the newsletter a little bit early this week. I wanted everyone to have all the information for the week! Thank you all who came to our writing celebration and enjoyed breakfast. I was so happy and thankful for all of you. You made it such an amazing time and the kids loved it! Great job to everyone who participated in the talent show! We had such a great time watching and were very good at being audience members. The field trip is coming up this Tuesday. I unfortunately will not be able to make it due to a Family Emergency. I have a substitute teacher who is very comfortable with me, our class and school. I am very sorry for any inconvenience but I am very thankful for such a supportive group of parents. Please send me all the pictures you take on the day of the field trip. There are 15 parent chaperones for the group of 23 students. It is optional if the students and chaperones would like to dress up for this event. We finally received our stem activities and the students are LOVING them. They are really working on their fine motor practice and engineering skills. Math: We will be reviewing the last two units of math this week. We will be working on challenge problems and working through common errors on the test.
