I was so happy to see a lot of families at Buffalo Wild Wings and the Discovery Fair last week. Thank you all so much for attending if it fit into your schedule.
Everyone has signed up for conferences and I sent home reminders. If something comes up and you can't attend, please let me know. Conferences are only 20 minutes long and I am booked up so I will have to limit you to your time frame. This is for the parents only. Please do not bring your children to the conference. We have had A LOT of student go home with fevers this past week. Please do not send your children to school sick. It puts everyone else at risk to get sick. Your child MUST BE fever free for 24 hours without medication before you send them back to school. If your child is going to be sick please contact me or the office. Reading: We are going to be doing our reading level tests again this week. We also will be working on solving hard and long words. We will have another read in on Friday. Students can bring in a beach towel, a stuffed animal and/or books from home. I have schedules mystery readers for the month of March with people from around the district. Make sure you are still reading at home. Writing: We are going to continue to work on our collections. We will be working on opinion writing and will be sending home the collections by the end of the week. Phonics: We are word builders and are working on vowel teams. We are doing daily snap word practice. We have a lot of friends who need extra practice, so make sure you are also practicing at home. Science: We are finishing up our light and sound unit this week. Math: We will be working more with data and collecting data. Next week we will have the common assessment and Unit 6 Test. I will send home an optional review packet. This has helped tremendously for the students who have done this. Behavior: We have had some questionable behaviors the past two weeks. We are not always being the respectful and kind groups of students we had. I would appreciate if you would have a conversation with your child about the importance of following directions and respect as well. Thank you! Reminders:

Students will be picking a topic and researching all about the topic. We will present what we have learned and be the teacher on Friday! Please send those in when you can. Phonics: We will be continuing to work on our snap words and will be talking more about contractions. Science: We will be studying light and shadows this week. We have a lot to do this week before mid-winter break next week. Reminder we do not have school next Monday or Tuesday.
Reading: We will be looking deeper into nonfiction reading. We will be looking at the endings, comparing and contrasting books and how to ask questions to deeper our understanding. Math: We will be continuing to work on Unit 5. We will be working with numbers with 3 addends and continuing to add in our teen numbers. This can be challenging to look through the math work each day. I will send home a practice math packet over mid-winter break. As always this is optional. Phonics: We will be working on endings, contractions and long vowels. Writing: We will continue to write our nonfiction chapter books. We will be focusing on editing and writing introductions. Science: We are going to continue to explore sound. After mid-winter break we will be making our own instruments. We are looking for donations of paper and plastic cups, small boxes (Kleenex or shoe), cardboard tubes (paper-towel holders), and rubber bands. Reading: We are working more on our nonfiction reading. We are reading with smoother voices and talking more about our books. Remember to keep reading at home. Writing: We are working on writing with details and adding more to our nonfiction chapter books. We have been working very hard at this. Last week we had a chance to go write in Mrs. Burks' classroom and check out her new furniture. The students loved it. Phonics: We are working reading across the entire word and looking at the different parts of the word. For example, kids vs kinds. We are noticing the differences and reading the correct word. Science: We are starting our sound unit. We will be exploring how sound is made and how we make sounds. Math: We are starting unit 5 this week with a focus on adding and subtracting teen numbers. Please review the math pages at home each day. This can be a tricky unit. We will be doing some additional work with groundhogs day this week. Reminders:

We had friends make bird feeders, shovel snow, make cookies and thank you cards. My heart is so full and I am so grateful for a kind group of kiddos. Last week in science we were engineers and created protection based on a plant or animal. Reading: We are looking at hard words in our books and learning all about them. We are using our strategies to find out what they mean and learning from them. We have all be tested and have gotten our updated levels. Writing: We are working on information chapter books. We will be adding a table of contents and editing this week. Math: We are reviewing Unit 3 and 4 this week and working on higher level math skills. We are talking about our math and how we can do better. I am very proud of everyone's hard work last week on the Unit 4 test and the common assessment. Reading: Students are continuing to read nonfiction books and use print features to help them learn more about a topic. Math: We have the common assessment and the Unit 4 math test this week. The optional packet sent home will be beneficial. Writing: We are continuing to add more and more information and facts to our informational chapter books. Phonics: We are continuing to look at different endings and read through the word. Science: We will be working on building our protective gear. If you would like to send in supplies (Kleenex boxes, aluminium foil, etc.) you are more than welcome to do so. Reminders: I hope everyone survived the icy, cold, rainy and snowy weekend we had. We have a lot of fun things ready for us this week and I can't wait to get started!

I will be testing students on their reading at the end of this week so make sure you are practicing each day. Writing: We are working on informational chapter books. We are writing books to teach others. Please fill out the paper that was sent home back to school asap to help your child come up with ideas during writing. Math: We will be taking the Unit 4 test and the common assessment next week. Make sure you are looking at their math work each day. I will send home practice work over the week. It will be OPTIONAL. Science: We are working on how engineers find ideas in nature to inspire their inventions. We will be planning and creating our own design next week. If you have any extra supplies (shoe boxes, toilet paper holders, paper plates, etc) please send them in for our inventing. We are starting new units this week! Reading: Students must be reading at the level F by the end of January. They should be taking home new take home books about once a week now. Majority of students are remembering to change them out themselves. We are starting our non-fiction reading this week. We will be talking about the differences between fiction and non-fiction and will be reading a lot more non-fiction books. Writing; We will be starting our non-fiction chapter books. Before break we started researching animals and we will be writing as an expert to teach others. This is a favorite for first graders. Phonics: We will be looking at beginning and endings of words. Math: We are working on Unit 4. We are working on place value. We are working on doubles, counting on tens and adding teen numbers. We will be reviewing for the start of the week. Science: We will be talking about engineering practices this week. Social Studies: We will learn about the Lunar New Year and New Year's Traditions. Reminders:
